Where Does the tap water in Canberra Come From?

The Drinking Water Supply for Canberra comes from 3 main sources, the Cotter River Catchment, the Queanbeyan River and the Murrumbidgee.

Canberra and Queanbeyans’ drinking water is drawn from the Bendora Dam with water from Googong Dam being drawn during times of high demand during summer or extensive dry periods. In periods of low water supply, additional water can be drawn from the Murrumbidgee River.

Water from the Cotter River and Murrumbidgee River catchments is treated at Mount Stromlo water treatment plant, while water from Googong dam is treated at the Googong water treatment plant

Chemicals added to your drinking water

Sodium silico fluoride added to help prevent tooth decay

Chlorine added as a disinfectant. A large amount of research and many studies have been conducted to ensure success in new treatment plants using chlorine as a disinfectant. A leading advantage of chlorination is that it has proven effective against bacteria and viruses; however, it cannot inactivate all microbes. Some protozoan cysts are resistant to the effects of chlorine.

Unlike many other major capital cities, chloramines are not added to Canberra water (2019).

What else could be in my Tap Water in the ACT?

Cryptosporidium and Giardia are microorganisms that can cause gastroenteritis. Infected people show eitherno symptoms or can suffer diarrhoea, vomiting and fever,  healthy people usually recover fully. Due to the lower levels of catchment protection and little detention time the Murrumbidgee River is more likely to contain Cryptosporidium and Giardia. The risk increases further during rainfall events with increased runoff. There were three positive detections of Giardia and one positive detection of Cryptosporidium within the Murrumbidgee River during 2016–17.
